Construction Tech 221x300 New Tech Tools of the Trade Give Contractors an EdgeLast week I talked about how, more than ever, the construction industry is incorporating new technologies to make time on the jobsite more efficient and effective. From business-specific apps to heavy-duty electronic gadgetry, a variety of practical options are available for construction professionals. Here we get a little more granular, with a look at a few of the ways construction pros are going high tech.

Heavy Duty Hardware

Tablets, such a the iPad, are currently the hot commodity for construction industry professionals. A recent article in Construction Digital confirmed they’re being used to expedite information sharing and improve efficiency and cost savings.

Construction zones can be treacherous areas for delicate electronic devices, so laptop manufacturers are now offering products that can withstand the bumps and bruises common to life on a construction site. The Panasonic Toughbook offers lightweight portability with shock-mounted flex-connect hard drive and spill-resistant keyboard.

Apps

Software applications (or Apps) are everywhere these days and can solve for virtually any need. Construction-specific apps are there for the taking, too, and offer inexpensive (and often times, free) options for tackling a range of common tasks. From calculating concrete volume to generating multiple estimates, there are a number of apps geared to the construction industry that can make a construction site manager’s life easier.

Peripheral Items

The construction industry’s growing penchant for high-tech devices has opened up opportunities for peripheral goods manufacturers to gain a marketing foothold. OtterBox, for example, produces a top quality line of cases for iPhones, Android phones, and other mobile devices. Its Armor series claims to be “The Toughest Case Ever Built”, and promises to be waterproof, drop proof, dust proof, and crush proof — perfectly suited for duty on a busy construction site.

The Future

There’s little doubt that technology is providing the construction industry with a vehicle for overall cost savings and enhanced productivity. With high tech products coming to market on a regular basis and frequent advancements close behind, it’s an exciting time for the construction trade.
