Construction is going high tech. The latest innovations focus on greener materials, worker safety, and heavy equipment automation. As you prepare for your next project, here are some new products that may interest you.
CO2 Bricks
Carbon Dioxide, or CO2, is a naturally occurring gas that can be harmful or fatal in large quantities. Australia’s University of Newcastle, chemical company Orica, and carbon innovations company GreenMag Group spent six years developing a way to turn carbon emissions into bricks and pavers for construction. While the earth turns carbon emissions into rock over time, this group has found a way to accelerate the process.
CO Sniffing Hard Hats
Carbon monoxide is highly poisonous and is the foremost product of combustion engines. Nearly 100 U.S. workers died from carbon monoxide poisoning from 1990 to 1999. Now workers in areas prone to high emissions can wear carbon monoxide detecting hard hats. The hats use noninvasive blood oxygen monitors to determine how much carbon monoxide in a worker’s system and warns the worker before it reaches dangerous levels.
Bulldozers on Auto Pilot
As experienced workers retire, the shortage of skilled large equipment handlers is growing. Construction equipment manufacturers, including Caterpillar, Deere & Co., and Japan’s Komatsu, are incorporating GPS, electronic controls, and even auto-pilot features into their latest products to help new operators learn to use the tools quickly.
As technology advances, construction sites are becoming high-tech environments that are safer, easier and more earth-friendly. Look for these and more tech tools and solutions to land in the near future.
